António Andrade is a Partner at Abreu Advogados since 2019, working essentially in all matters related to intellectual property.

He has been particularly involved in court and arbitration litigation regarding patents (especially pharmaceutical patents), trade marks, designs, copyright and trade secrets, having built up experience over more than twenty years.

He has also advised a number of companies on intellectual property enforcement strategies and also on defending the validity of those rights.

He is a Specialist Lawyer in Intellectual Property Law (a title awarded by the Portuguese Bar Association) and a Patent, Trade Mark and Design Attorney. He is also a member of several national and international intellectual property organisations (ACPI, AIPPI, ECTA, FICPI, INTA, MARQUES, UNION-IP), having been the President of ECTA’s Design Committee (2010-2016). He is currently a member of ECTA’s Patent Committee, UNION-IP’s Litigation Commission and the International Chamber of Commerce’s PT Commission on Intellectual Property (ICC).

He has been a guest speaker and participant at many national and international congresses and seminars on intellectual property, and has published numerous articles and studies on intellectual property law at international level.

He was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Science and Technology Faculty of Universidade Nova de Lisboa and is a lecturer on the postgraduate course in Intellectual Law of the Faculty of Law of Lisbon and APDI.

Work Experience

  • Representation of pharmaceutical patent right holders (originator and research companies) in hundreds of judicial actions and arbitrations, as well as in judicial actions concerning the validity of these rights.

  • Representation of rights holders of utility models, trade marks, designs, copyright, in hundreds of judicial actions and arbitrations, as well as in judicial actions concerning the validity of these rights.

  • Advise to several national and international companies regarding strategies and protection of intellectual property rights and their enforcement.

  • Advise to several national and international companies regarding the licensing of intellectual property rights.

  • Advise to various national and international companies regarding trade secrets and unfair competition.

  • Representation of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies in hundreds of arbitration and court cases. Recently, he obtained a landmark decision at European level in an appeal against a refusal to protect a Supplementary Protection Certificate (for a patent owned by a well-known US biotechnology company), which was eventually granted. The lawsuits he has been involved with have high financial values, as pharmaceutical patents are worth hundreds of millions of dollars or euros
